For those of you that have been following me for a while, you know that I am not a professional baker.
I do not even pretend to be anywhere close to a professional baker. When it comes to anything in the kitchen, I am a quick, easy and technically low challenging kind of girl.
When I had kids, I made a promise to myself that I would make a cake and decorate it every year for their birthday’s. This in itself was a huge task I set for myself and a pretty daunting one!
I didn’t make the promise for the cake that they would have at their birthday party (because I really don’t need that kind of stress), but simply for the cake on their actual birthday, that will be enjoyed by just immediate family.
The cakes that I have made might not win any competitions, but so far the kids have loved them and that’s all that matters.
I decided to make an easy monkey birthday cake for my son’s first birthday, and I will show you how you can do this too.
If you are holding a monkey birthday party, then this would be the perfect cake to prepare for it.
I did debate with myself whether the cake looked more like a bear than a monkey, but I will reiterate the “I’m not a professional baker” again, and we will just roll with it.
8 Easy Steps To Make A Monkey Birthday Cake
Step 1: Bake the Cake
Firstly you need to bake the cake!
If you like you can bake a cake from scratch, but seeing as you are doing the hard work of decorating it, there is nothing wrong with grabbing a packet mix!
My son doesn’t actually eat cake, so I was doing this more for me and his big sister. But I thought I would try a strawberry cake as he loved strawberries at the time.
In the end it didn’t really matter what flavor it was because he literally ate one mouth full!
Step 2: Level the top of the cake
All cakes have a tendency to rise in the middle, so you need to slice off the top to make it nice and flat. You can use a cake leveler, but if you don’t have one to hand then a knife will do the job just as well.
Don’t worry if it’s a bit uneven in places, as the whole cake will be covered with butter cream.
Need some help making the butter cream? You can follow the recipe here, but just switch some of the icing sugar for cocoa.
Step 3: Cover the cake with brown icing
Make up some chocolate butter cream and cover the entire cake. Try and smooth this as best as you can with a spatula or a wide flat knife.
This chocolate butter cream is making the face of the monkey birthday cake.
Tip: Put some butter cream aside to use later for the monkey face. Do this before you add the cocoa to the mixture.
Step 4: Draw outline of a Monkey face
Using an edible decorating pen, make an outline of the monkey face on the cake.
Step 5: Fill in the monkey face
With the butter cream that you put aside in step 3 you can use this to complete the monkey face.
Add a small amount of cocoa to the butter cream mixture to give the brown color, but don’t add too much as you want it to be lighter than the main money face.
Step 6: Create the monkey ears
I used two cookies from a packet of Arnott’s choc ripple to make the monkey ears. You can really choose any chocolate biscuits that you like.
In the middle of the cookie, place some of the butter cream that you used for the monkey face.
Step 7: Create a hole for the monkey ears
At the side of the cake, gently slice out an area that the cookie will sit into. Start by making a small slice and make this bigger as you need.
You want the monkey ears to be sitting as firmly in the cake if possible, so you don’t want this slice to be so big that the cookie falls out.
Step 8: Draw the monkey face
With a dark chocolate edible pen, draw on the monkey’e eye’s, nose and mouth. Use some edible candy eyeballs to sit in the middle of the brown monkey eyes.
The Easiest Monkey Birthday Cake
That’s it, your done. Your monkey birthday cake is ready to thrill your cheeky little one.
I added some lolly banana’s on the side of the cake for some added color and just for a bit of fun.
As far as making a monkey birthday cake goes, this is about as simple as you can get.
A simple cake is also a great one though, so it really doesn’t matter that it doesn’t look good enough to go in a glossy magazine, because the kids are going to love it.
At the end of the day, this is all that counts.
