When it comes to my kids birthday’s, I like to make them a home made birthday cake.  I also try as hard as possible to stick with the same theme as their birthday party.

Last year I made my son a monkey birthday cake and this year it was a monster cake.

I’m the kind of mom who has grand plans for their kid’s cakes, but then time is always an issue and before I know it, I’m crazily trying to just scramble ‘something’ together.  Easy has to be the name of the game otherwise it simply wouldn’t get done.

So be assured.  If I can make this monster cake, you will find it a walk in the park!

Create The Monster Cake Eyes

Before you start decorating the monster cake, I would recommend that you make the eyes.  This way you can put the eyes aside to set whilst the rest of the creativity takes place.

Step 1: Gather The Ingredients For The Monster Cake Eyes

To create the monster cake eyes you will require the following:

  • 2 large round cookies (I used chocolate chip as they are my son’s favorite, but they can be any type of cookie).
  • 2 large white chocolate melts
  • 2 milk chocolate chips
  • 2 cake pop sticks
  • Extra white chocolate for melting to use as glue.

Step 2: Attach The Cake Pop Sticks To The Cookies

Turn over the cookies, and lay the cake pop sticks into the middle of the cookie.  Use some of the melted chocolate to act as a glue and cover the cake pop stick over the back of the cookie.

Step 3: Add The Eyeballs

Turn the cookie back to the front and attach one of the white chocolate melts to the middle of the cookie.  Attach with some melted chocolate.  Then attach a milk chocolate chip to the middle of the chocolate melt.

To create some crazy looking monster cake eyes, simply change the positioning of where you place the white candy melt (and or the milk chocolate chip).

Create The Body Of The Monster Cake

There are a few ingredients that you will need to create the monster cake.

Step 1: Bake The Cake

Start by baking the cake of whatever flavor you like.  Chocolate is always a winner in my family, so a chocolate mud cake is always a great option.

Whether you choose to make your own cake from scratch, or use a packet mix, it really doesn’t matter.

However, due to the amount of decorating required, I would recommend that you purchase the vanilla frosting instead of making it yourself.

Have the frosting and the color you wish to change it to ready for once the cake is ready to be decorated.

Step 2: Slice The Cake And Add A Filling

It’s always nice to have a bit of extra “oomph” in a cake, so slice it in half and add a filling.  This could be jam, cream or ganache.  I used a chocolate ganache that I could seriously eat straight.  Here is the chocolate addict talking again!

Once again I purchased mine but if you would like to know how to make your own chocolate ganache, you might like to check out this easy tutorial.

Don’t worry about making it look nice and neat.  No-one will be studying the inside of the monster cake!

Add a layer of chocolate ganache in the cake

Step 3: Add a Crumb Layer of Frosting

The crumb layer is exactly as it sounds.  It is the first layer of frosting you place on the cake which always looks messy as it picks up the cake crumbs and excess ganache from the middle of the cake.

Simply spread the frosting over the whole cake as evenly as you can.  Don’t panic if it looks a mess.  It won’t by the time you have finished!

After you have placed the crumb layer, place it in the fridge so that it hardens before you continue with the top layer.  5-10 minutes in the fridge is usually sufficient for this purpose.

Step 4: Give The Monster Cake It’s Fur

Fill a piping bag with the butter cream frosting and squeeze out a small amount before you start.  The tip I used was a Wilton 233.

This tip provides the fur effect.  It is also the same tip used to create grass.

Piping Bag and tip

Start by piping around the bottom of the cake.  You can create different length tips of fur, as when it is all combined it will flow together nicely.

Add fur to the bottom of the cake

Keep moving around and up the cake until you have completely covered the entire cake.  It is now starting to resemble something of a monster cake!

Step 5: Add The Mouth To The Monster Cake

Using a decorating icing pen, draw on the mouth.  I used a thick tip and gave the monster a cute smile, but you can create whatever kind of mouth you would like.

Step 6: Add The Monster Eyes

Remember those adorable monster eyes you made earlier?  Now is the time to go and grab them to put the finishing touches to the monster cake.

Simply slide the cake pop stick into the top of the monster cake until the cookie is almost touching the fur.

That’s it.  The monster cake is now ready to be shown off to everyone.

The one thing that you can guarantee with this monster cake is that it will be a hit with the kids.  My son’s eyes nearly popped out his head when he saw it.  It’s those moment’s that make it all worth while.
